For young beginning readers:

Starfall - a free public service to motivate children to read with phonics.
And for younger intermediate readers: Starfall (I'm Reading) Click on words in the books for help.
Speakaboos - Stories read to you (with subtitles)
Literactive - *You need to sign up (for free) - Reading material for pre-school, kindergarten and grade 1
BBC Interactive sites: Bitesize Games that teach, Cbeebies story reading and activities

Writing

StoryBird - Get inspired by some cool artwork and write a story to go with the images. Create your own book!
One Word - You get 1 word and 1 minute to write about it.

Collaborative Writing
WallWisher - Click on 'Build a Wall' and then share your wall with others.
Webspiration - BRAINSTORMING and writing tool. Use this on your own or to collaborate with other writers.

Free Rice - Play and donate rice to the needy. Go to the 'Subject' tab to change subject and also after your first attempt you will see an option at the bottom of the screen to change levels if it is too hard or too easy.
